Photo Couplers

An opto-isolator is an element that converts input electrical signals into light, converts the light back into electrical signals via an insulator and then outputs the signals. In regular semiconductor elements, there is one GND terminal, but in the opto-isolator there is a GND terminal on both the input side and output side for a total of two, and each is insulated internally. The input and output are powered by separate power supplies, which helps protect the output destination and human bodies from high voltage. The element characteristics can also be used as a filter. Opto-isolators are mainly used for pulse transmission or switching operations. Applications include factory automation controllers that prevent the effects of noise being received from powered devices, and audio equipment or electronic devices that prevent noise when switching.
