- Question: What do we need to know about the effect of heat on rubber couplings and their maintenance?
- Answer: When heat is applied to natural rubber, its surface oil disappears and the rubber loses elasticity and hardens. The hardening process varies by temperature; the heat on CF-A used within an engine housing will harden the rubber from the surface, and when the torque is applied, the crack then starts from the hardened layer and further the damage. As a maintenance guideline, replacement is recommended when the rubber hardness reaches roughly 15 Hs before use.
