FAQ Resistor

Question: What is resistor and its function?
Answer: A resistor is a small electronic device commonly used in electrical circuits to reduce current and voltage. It can be used for both direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC). It is measured in ohms (Ω). The higher resistance value in ohms, the greater the resistance to electric current.
Question: How many type of resistor?
Answer: Resistors can be classified into 3 types:
1.Fixed resistors:
This type of resistor has a predetermined resistance that cannot be adjusted up or down, but it comes in many resistance values and shapes. For examples carbon composite resistors and carbon film resistors.
2.Variable resistors or potentiometers:
These resistors can change their resistance value within a desired range. They can be adjusted by rotating a shaft, sliding a level, or using a screwdriver to adjust a specific point on the resistor. Examples include wire-wound resistors.
3.Special resistors:
This type of resistor can change resistance value from external factors such as temperature, light intensity, etc. For examples thermistors and LDR (Light Dependent Resistor)
Question: How to read electrical resistance?
Answer: To read the resistance value of a resistor from color bands, follow these steps:
1. Determine the number of color bands on the resistor, e.g., 4 bands.
2. Refer to a table of color bands for resistors and identify the numerical value associated with each colored band, based on its position:
- The 1st band corresponds to the 1st digit of the resistor value (e.g., brown = 1).
- The 2nd band corresponds to the 2nd digit of the resistor value (e.g., red = 2).
- The 3rd band corresponds to the multiplier (e.g., green = 10 to the power of 5).
- The 4th band corresponds to the tolerance in percentage (e.g., gold = ±5%).
Once all the numerical values have been identified, arrange them in the correct reading format as shown in the figure 1,200 kΩ ±5% (one thousand two hundred kilo-ohms plus and minus five percent).
Question: How to calculate the resistor by color code?
Answer: Based on the previous example, we determined that the resistance is 1200 kΩ with a tolerance of ±5%.
The next step is calculate the range of resistances value:
1. The maximum resistance is : 1200 kΩ + 5% = 1260 kΩ.
2. The minimum resistance is : 1200 kΩ - 5% = 1140 kΩ.
Therefore, the range of resistance value is between 1140 kΩ and 1260 kΩ.
Question: What are the resistor symbols?
Answer: Here are examples of resistor symbols. These symbols are based on both ANSI and IEC standards. Let's take a look at the types of symbols and colour code that are frequently used.
