Switching Hub

A hub is a wiring concentrator such as a LAN, USB, etc. By allowing multiple computers to connect to the LAN via a hub, it is possible to add or change devices, or by cascading to connect more hubs beyond the hub, you can connect even more devices to the network. In addition, connecting USB devices to a PC via a hub allows more peripheral devices to be used. The hub is used as a switching hub for maintaining the Internet environment such as industrial network equipment, offices, etc. Depending on the product, various functions such as reverse polarity protection, overcurrent prevention, noise prevention, an alarm, etc. Some of them are power-saving types that comply with the Energy Conservation Law and products that comply with the Electrical Appliances and Material Safety Act.

Guidelines for Selecting Switching Hub for Machinery

  • Choose an Industrial-Grade Switching Hub: Withstands industrial environments (temperatures from -40°C to 75°C), features a robust metal casing, and is vibration-resistant. Suitable for use in control cabinets or directly on machinery.
  • Sufficient Number of Ports: Consider the number of LAN (RJ45) ports needed for all connecting devices such as PLCs, HMIs, Sensors, and cameras.
  • Choose the Appropriate Speed: The minimum speed should be 10/100 Mbps (Fast Ethernet). For high data transmission needs like image recognition cameras or Big Data → choose Gigabit Ethernet (1000 Mbps).
  • Power over Ethernet (PoE) Support: If you need to power IP cameras or IoT devices via LAN cables, choose a Switching Hub that supports PoE.
  • Managed or Unmanaged Features: Unmanaged Switch: Easy to install, affordable, suitable for basic systems. Managed Switch: Offers control functions like VLAN, QoS, SNMP, ideal for complex systems requiring high stability.
  • Installation: Available in DIN Rail Mount for control cabinets or Wall Mount options.
  • Redundant Power Supply: Provides backup power in case of power source issues, ensuring continuous operation of connected devices.

Guidelines for Maintaining Switching Hub

Maintaining hub switches, especially in machinery or industrial plant systems, is crucial for ensuring continuous network operation and preventing downtime that could impact production.

  • Clean Equipment Regularly: Wipe dust or dirt from the device using a dry cloth or soft brush. If in a dusty environment, use a dustproof Switching Hub or install it in a control cabinet.
  • Check Cooling: Ensure ventilation slots are not obstructed. If the Switching Hub has a cooling fan, check its operation. Avoid placing it near heat sources or direct sunlight.
  • Inspect LAN Ports and Cables: Ensure LAN cables are securely connected, not loose or damaged. Occasionally disconnect and reconnect cables to prevent corrosion or loose connectors.
  • Back Up Managed Switch Parameters: If using a Managed Switching Hub, back up the configuration settings as a .cfg file or the format specific to the brand.
  • Check LED Status Indicators: Monitor the status LEDs for each port (e.g., Link, Activity, Speed). A lit or blinking LED indicates proper operation. No light or abnormal blinking may indicate a problem with the cable or the end device.
  • Update Firmware (if applicable): Check the manufacturer's website for new firmware. Updates can fix bugs or improve performance.
  • Check Power Supply: Verify that the voltage and current are within the device's supported range. Consider using a redundant power supply for critical applications.
