ROUGHING END MILL_C428

Caution
Product Description
Dormer Pramet C428 short series roughing end mill made from powder metallurgical HSS-E with Alcrona (AlCrN) coating, featuring the HRA fine pitch asymmetrical profile, 35° helix and 12° rake angle. Manufactured to DIN 844 K with a DIN 1835 B Weldon shank for shoulder milling, slot milling and ramping in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, copper alloys and high-temperature alloys.
Standards
- Dimensions according to DIN 844 K (short series).
- Weldon shank according to DIN 1835 B.
- Cutting diameter tolerance k12, shank tolerance h6.
Usage guidance
- Clamp the tool by its Weldon flat in a side lock (Weldon) holder so that it cannot pull out under heavy roughing loads.
- Use the shortest tool and the shortest flute length the depth of cut allows, together with the largest permissible diameter, to maximise rigidity.
- Suitable for radial, diagonal (ramping) and axial feed directions.
- Ensure effective chip evacuation, especially in full-width slot milling and ramping.
- The roughing profile leaves a wavy surface; follow with a finishing end mill where surface quality or close tolerance is required.
- Take cutting speeds and feeds from Dormer Pramet cutting data for the specific workpiece material.
Cautions
- Cutting edges are sharp; wear gloves when handling and safety glasses while machining.
- Do not continue to use a worn or chipped tool, as this increases the risk of breakage.
Dormer Pramet C428 Roughing End Mill
The C428 is a short series, multi-flute roughing end mill made from powder metallurgical cobalt high speed steel (HSS-E-PM) and finished with an Alcrona (AlCrN) coating. Its HRA profile, a fine pitch asymmetrical rounded chipbreaker form, breaks chips into small segments so that large volumes of material can be removed with lower cutting forces and less vibration than with a plain end mill.
Key features
- Powder metallurgical HSS-E substrate combines toughness with high wear resistance for heavy roughing.
- Alcrona (AlCrN) coating improves performance in difficult-to-machine materials and extends tool life.
- HRA fine pitch asymmetrical rounded profile breaks chips for efficient roughing.
- 35° helix angle and 12° rake angle for free cutting and smooth chip flow.
- Short length of cut for high rigidity, with neck relief behind the cutting part for extra reach.
- 4 flutes on 6 – 22 mm diameters and 6 flutes on 25 – 32 mm diameters.
- Flatted Weldon shank to DIN 1835 B for secure, slip-free clamping.
- Dimensions according to DIN 844 K.
Applications
Shoulder milling, slot milling and ramping in alloy and tool steel, stainless steel, cast iron, copper and copper alloys, and high-temperature alloys. Typical uses include roughing pockets, slots and shoulders ahead of a finishing operation.

One-piece solid end mill made up of a cutting part, a neck relief and a cylindrical shank.
- Cutting part: right hand helical flutes with 35° helix; the cutting edges carry the HRA fine pitch asymmetrical rounded chipbreaker profile over the full length of cut. Diameter 6 – 32 mm, tolerance k12.
- Neck relief: a section directly behind the length of cut that gives additional reach, e.g. 31.5 mm reach with neck relief on C42810.0.
- Shank: cylindrical shank with a Weldon clamping flat to DIN 1835 B, tolerance h6.
- Main dimensions per size: cutting diameter, length of cut, overall length and shank diameter (see the specification table).
- Example C42810.0: diameter 10 mm, length of cut 22 mm, overall length 72 mm, shank diameter 10 mm, 4 flutes.
How to choose the right C428
- Diameter: choose the diameter to suit the slot width or the required radial engagement; for slots, the tool diameter defines the slot width.
- Length of cut: choose a size whose length of cut covers the axial depth of cut; the short series keeps the tool rigid.
- Number of flutes: 4 flutes on 6 – 22 mm and 6 flutes on 25 – 32 mm.
- Shank: check that your holder accepts the Weldon shank size of the selected tool (6, 10, 12, 16, 20, 25 or 32 mm).
Selection by workpiece material
The manufacturer recommends C428 for alloy and tool steel, stainless steel, cast iron, copper and copper alloys, and high-temperature alloys. The Alcrona (AlCrN) coating is aimed at difficult-to-machine materials such as stainless steel and high-temperature alloys. Aluminium is not among the materials listed for this series.
Roughing and finishing
Use C428 to remove most of the stock quickly, then leave a small, even allowance for a finishing end mill to achieve the final dimension and surface finish.
