During instances of vertical drive (lowering operation) or when there is a sudden start or stop during high levels of inertia, the motor is rotated by external forces and acts as a power generator. The driver can get damaged if the regenerative power generated at that time exceeds the regenerative power absorbing capacity of the driver. In such circumstances, connect the regenerative resistor to the driver and the regenerative power will be released as thermal energy.
