Verification of main components

  • The cylinder thrust is verified based on the load of the linear movement part and the cam weight.
  • Cylinder thrust
    • Required thrust: F = (F1 x r1 + F2 x r2) / r
    • Load of linear movement part: F1 = μm x 9.8N
    • Friction coefficient of linear guide: μ = 0.1 (actual measurement value)
    • Total weight of linear movement part: m = 0.096kg
    • F1 = 0.1 x 0.096 x 9.8 = 0.0941N
    • Cam's own weight: F2 = 0.185kg x 9.8m/sec² = 1.814N
    • Distance between cam center and linear movement part center: r1 = 60mm
    • Distance between cam center and center of gravity of cam: r2 = 25.77mm (measured using 3D CAD data)
    • Distance between cam center and rod end: r = 60mm
    • F = (0.0941 x 60 + 1.814 x 25.77) / 60 = 0.776N
    • Theoretical cylinder thrust at operating air pressure of 0.4 MPa: F0 = 80N (φ16) (from catalog)
    • If we put a load factor η = 50%,
    • Actual thrust = F0 x 0.5 = 40N > F, hence, there is a sufficient margin.

Other Design Consideration

  • Cam driven mechanism and cylinder that are installed below the base.
  • By assembling three milled plates with bolts, the parallelism between the link and the linear guide can be adjusted easily at a low cost.
  • The link plate tightly retains the shaft/bearing part at the fulcrum by retaining the other side of the shaft with a shaft collar on the rear side link plate. With this design, positioning is possible without applying thrust load on the bearing.
