Purpose

  • A machine that automatically spools the paper backing from double sided tape as the tape is dispensed.
  • As the tape is pulled out, the lower pulley holds the tape in place while the upper pulley spools the paper backing.
  • Through the use of a belt, the upper and lower pulleys are coupled together to absorb rotational speed differences.

  • A manual mechanism which collects the paper backing on double sided tape as it is used.

Selection Criteria for Main Components

  • Pulley
    • As the tape is dispensed, the main side roll diameter will decrease, while the paper backing side roll will increase causing the pulley ratio to vary. To let the main side pulley slip, a round grooved pulley is selected. To give the paper backing side pull the maximum amount of grip a V grooved pulley is used.
  • One-way clutch
    • A one-way clutch is used to prevent the main side pulley from reversing rotation.

Design Evaluation

Verification of main components

  • When setting up match the pulley ratio.
  • Pulley
    • Main side: Round pulley (PCD60)
    • Paper backing side: V pulley (PCD30)
    • Pulley ratio: 2:1
    • Double sided tape O.D. φ120
    • Paper backing O.D. φ60
    • By matching the ratio between the paper backing and tape side pulley's, spooling will begin at the same speed.

Other Design Consideration

  • At the time of initial set up, the pulley ratio can be matched, however as the system is used the ratio will become unbalanced. Therefore, the main side pulley is allowed to slip to establish a proper ratio. ( Continuously variable transmission )

    A transmission mechanism where reduction ratio is continuously variable.

  • The slip occurs by the round belt contacting different surfaces on the pulleys.
  • A one-way clutch is installed on the main side pulley to prevent reverse rotation and the loosening of the paper backing spool.
